Criminal law
Katie is a specialist criminal practitioner in complex and serious crime. She qualified as a solicitor in 1990. She has a law degree from Nottingham University and also has obtained higher rights of audience so she can appear as an advocate in the Crown Court.
Katie regularly acts for professionals, such as bankers, journalists, teachers and doctors, as well as for corporate clients and those working within the charitable sector. Her criminal cases frequently involve a regulatory or employment law dimension and she has over recent years gained particular experience acting for media organisations affected by the criminal law.
Through defending in a number of high-profile HSE investigations, Katie has significant experience of health and safety legislation as it applies to criminal law. She has also recently trained company directors on the implications of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.
A significant proportion of her practice involves serious fraud investigations and prosecutions, as well as confiscation and other POCA proceedings. Her recent fraud case work has included acting for an individual in connection with an investigation by the City of London Police Overseas Corruption Unit; defending in a local authority procurement fraud; and advising on an allegation of conspiracy to cheat the public revenue.
Katie regularly acts in cases which may span more than one jurisdiction, such as where there are parallel investigations by overseas authorities or a risk of extradition to another country.
