Public Law and Human Rights
Bindmans was founded in 1974 by the leading civil liberties lawyer, Sir Geoffrey Bindman. As a firm, we remain at the forefront of human rights legal work in the UK and internationally.
Our dedicated team of public lawyers are recognised experts in acting for individuals who wish to challenge abuses of power by authorities by way of judicial review. We also offer specialist assistance for individuals and companies in respect of parallel regulatory investigations under statutory or local government powers – from representation before a professional body to a public inquiry or an ombudsman’s investigation. In each instance our experience gained across a range of different sectors can be brought to bear to ensure any knock-on effects of a fraud investigation are dealt with effectively and efficiently.
Equally, during a serious fraud investigation itself, steps taken by regulators may exceed statutory or other powers. The Business Crime Unit works closely with the public law team to seek redress where necessary. Such challenges may involve taking steps to remedy an unlawful search of premises, or a wrongful arrest, through to human rights claims that may arise in substantive criminal proceedings.
